A remarkable resident artist has been the protagonist of the 2014 third edition of RAVE– East Village Artist Residency, the annual residency program in the countryside of Friuli, which hosts a leading international artist each summer, inviting them to undertake their research in this specific context.
This year the spirit of RAVE has been interpreted by the outstanding Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo, winner of the Golden Lion at the 51st Venice Biennale.

Some days after her period in Friuli (the artist stayed at our farmhouse, living alongside animals which have been saved from the abattoir, taken away from consumerist mechanisms and welcomed and cared for in a more natural environment) Regina José Galindo met the public at a conference at Casa Cavazzini, Museod’ArteModerna e Contemporanea in Udine. This has been made possible thanks to the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the support of the Comune di Udine and Civici Musei di Udine, in collaboration with Trieste Contemporanea, L’Officina, Gallinae in Fabula and OIPA Organizzazione Internazionale Protezione Animali and the Main partner Vulcano – Contemporary Production Unit.
In a dialogue between the artist Tiziana Pers, Regina José Galindo narrated how she came to create actions with an intense social and political commitment and she talked about her work specifically at RAVE. During her time in Friuli, Regina has been invited to develop and create a new project which interacts with the local environment and addresses the themes of the residency.

The experience in Friuli of the Guatemalan artist, one of the most magmatic representatives of Latin-American art, concluded with the performance La oveja negra (the Black Sheep), on Saturday 31st May in Torreano, in the amazing hills around Cividale.  At RAVE, for the first time in her artistic career, Regina faced the question of otherness beyond the boundaries of species, using her own body as a canvas to reconstruct the suffering and discrimination not just of the human other, but also of the animal other. Starting from a personal and biographical experience, together with the experiences and tragedies of other artist who have come before her, she created an action based on the concept of the “Black Sheep”, both within a human intra-species system and with a higher viewpoint of an inter-species perspective.  In the words of Pier Paolo Pasolini: “I too would like it if it were easy to isolate the black sheep. I too see the black sheep. I see quite a lot of them. I see all of them. That’s the problem …
